Stratasys J5 Medijet

The J5 Medijet is ready for biocompatible applications, but don’t let that fool you. Under the hood this Stratasys polyjet printer is exactly the same as the J55 Prime. The Rodgers Lab acquired the J5 to be ready for any application that requires a biocompatible material, with no loss of material quality for general use. The J5 can be used to make beautiful full color showpieces, strong and durable fixtures, jigs, mounts, lens tubes … even basic lenses. Biocompatible materials include a number of black, clear and opaque options (see below).

Schedule time with Dr. Nagle to get trained and you will be able to reserve the tool for ~4 -hr jobs during the day.

Since the J5 can print up to five materials at once, longer prints, up to 16 hrs, will be batched with other long prints and will be run overnight. One print job does not in general affect another. Even longer prints can be scheduled on a case-by-case basis.

Post-processing:

For a smooth and low-porosity finish, if compatible with the use of your 3D printed model, the Rodgers Lab recommends that you sand your model and apply a clear coat. If you want a high gloss for a show-piece, then extra buffing steps can be used for a mirror finish.

The lab has all the supplies that you need for sanding and polishing.

The recommended clear coat is 2K Clear Glamour from Spray Max. It is a high-durability two-part polyurethane product. This material REQUIRES a paint booth and TRAINING. Dr. Nagle will assis you in using a paint booth in Metropolis. If you wish to use a simpler clear-coat, then something like Krylon Acrylic will work, but won’t be as durable as a two-part polyurethane, and you would still require a paint booth. Other possible coatings include lacquer and spar varnish. Finally, most finishes can applied either by spraying or by brushing on. Note that brushing often leave brush marks.

A helpful video is provided by Stratasys in the Support Center linked above. Click on Videos and scroll down the list to find “Coating Parts – PolyJet Printers.” You would substitute a 2K Clear Glamour spray can for the Deltron mixture and spray gun featured in the video. Another helpful video selection can be found here.
